(JTA) — Vandals ripped down a Holocaust commemoration sign in a suburban New York town.
Staff at Congregation Sons of Israel in Upper Nyack, north of New York City, discovered the vandalism when they arrived for work on April 16, a congregant wrote in the Nyack News and Views. The sign was destroyed sometime after a ceremony the previous evening for Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Yom Hashoah, which began the same night.
The sign listed the number of Jews, citizens of the former Soviet Union, Poles, Roma, disabled, Jehovah’s Witnesses and homosexuals murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust.
A police report was filed.
The sign had been set up Tuesday by Sons of Israel Hebrew school students.
